WORK EXPERIENCE 2007 - July 2nd-13th 2007 The 2007 Work Experience Programme took place between 2nd and 13th July and gave placements to 7 young people from across the North Staffs area. The programme started with various group building exercises, and group work focusing on the nature of Community Music, and roles within Planet Sound Community Arts. The group also recieved tuition in African drumming, music technology skills and drama based performance. The first week ended with the group working on samba percussion and dance, and the work experience group accompanied Felix Gibbons and Clare Reynolds in a samba percussion and dance workshop as part of Crewe Carnival. Week 2 saw the participants learn about reskinning djembes, and then spending a day rehearsing a djembe drum and dance piece with Jahman Sillah and Clare Reynolds. This piece was performed at the Staffordshire University Summer School, with work experience students briefed to get audience members involved in a Planet Sound drum and dance workshop. The work experience group also visited Nigel Booth at the Barn for visualisation and motivational exercises - with members thinking about what they want to be, and how they can best express themselves through their music. The culmination of the work experience programme was the student led workshops, each student having to plan, deliver and evaluate their own workshop, delivered to the rest of the group. In their feedback, participants felt that after the 2 weeks they could work well as a team, with improved self confidence and musical skills. All of the participants said they would like to continue being involved with Planet Sound Community Arts in the future, and the group is currently working on a piece with the aim of performing at future Planet Sound events.
