Spectrums of Sound 2006
Victoria Hall, Nov 28th 2006
On 28th November 2006, a capacity crowd filled the Victoria Hall, Hanley to see the 2006 Spectrums of Sound event.
The event consisted of over 150 performers from the community who each performed as part of a particular group to produce a varied and entertaining show.
Each of the groups had worked with Planet Sound during 2006, and then come back together to prepare for the show as part of the rehearsal programme from Sept- Nov 2006.

In the foyer the group Kasanti performed. Based at St.Lukes in Silverdale, the drumming group performed three songs from their work during the Autumn term of 2006.

As the audience entered the hall, a film about the "Operatunity" project was being shown on the big screen featuring commentary from the participants and practioners as well as footage from the project.

As the house lights went down, a group made up of pupils from St.Lukes, Westlands, Madula and the Mitchell High School paraded through the audience performing a piece mixing the elements of Samba and Banghra.
As the group finished onstage with several instrumental breaks, the whole audience were invited to participate in a group percussion.
The audience were led by Nigel Booth of the Penny On Trust, who also acted as compere for the evening to give the whole event a special, interactive feel.

Next on stage were MaDula, who performed a piece bringing elements of Taiko drumming together with original choreography and costume. The piece will feature as part of the "Dance 07" festival at the Regent Theatre on 2nd Feb 2007.
The show then featured two performances from the Youth Inclusion Project.
Each group performed an original hip-hop track, tackling issues such as racism and respect. Members of this group have also produced a recording that can be found on the "Planet Sound 2006" CD.

Attention then focused on two bands from different parts of the City.
Emily and Orion played an original piece - the group consisting of guitar and keyboard, 2 vocalists, bass and drumkit. Members of this group from Brownhills have been together and working on material throughout 2006, and play regularly in the area.
The audience were then treated to Zac and Dave, a duo from Longton who played their original piece composed as part of the Access All Areas project involving both on guitars and singing.

The first half closed with the guest of honour, English Lightweight Boxing Champion Scott Lawton giving a speech and presenting all the young people with a commemortative CD entitled "Planet Sound 2006" featuring recordings of their music.
Throughout the interval, a group from Stafford played in the foyer area using the junk drumming artform to create an original sound.

The second half consisted of the adult groups of Planet Sound. On stage first were the CHINA Theatre company, presenting a whole theatre piece involving music, visuals dance and drama. The piece centered around the participants being seen as an individual, and how they are percieved in the community.
CHINA stands for Change In Attitudes and is for participants with learning difficulties.

Following on were the Planet Sound drumschool who performed a piece written by themselves for African djembe and duns and featuring local rap talent Justin Baker to provide lyrics. The group then segued into a traditonal West African piece called Kotoba.

The Carnival 2006 feature film was then given its first screening to the audience.
The film detailed the 2006 Carnival programme and featured footage from the parades, the songwriting and participants comments.

To close the show the Planet Sound artists performed the "Mountain of Iriga", to get the audience up and dancing and finished with a djembe ensemble. The Planet Sound group is to start performing soon with talks in place to take the group to Glastonbury and V festival in 2007 as part of the Penny On Charity promotional work.
