LATEST NEWS AND DEVELOPMENTS | NEWCASTLE CARNIVAL 2005 On 30th May 2005, Planet Sound Community Arts took part in the 2005 Newcastle Carnival Grand Parade. Listed at the "best thing in the carnival" by the local media, the parade troupe performed the piece "A paz no Planeta Reina Agora"(peace reigns on the planet) to the 40,000 crowd in their specially designed costume provided by the Cultural Sisters. 2005 marked the biggest parade troupe yet, with over 200 people involved in all sections of the performance. The parade was headed by this years Carnival King and Queen, mr.and mrs.Bourne - parents of the late Steven Bourne who the psca samba song is dedicated to. Following the King and Queen were the Front banner carriers and Front Commission dancers, choreographed this year by Romero Sambista who took part in the parade in traditional Brazillian costume. The Madula dancers were the next section in the parade, and were followed by the Cultural sisters and their Carnival Club project. The Planet Sound batteria led by Felix Gibbons provided the rhythm on various samba percussion, with the soundcar and musicians closely behind. Bosco De Olivera, co-writer of the 2005 samba was featured as the parade "puxador" and led the song, parading through the middle of the batteria and giving the participants an idea of how a parade is led in Brazil. The "Major" costume was carried by Ruby Sufi of the Cultural Sisters, adding an even stronger visual element to the costumes of the day. The China Theatre company came behind this, carrying banners and dancing, together with the pupils of St.Lukes Primary School and Sir Thomas Boughey who were taking part in Carnival for the first time. The parade lasted around an hour and a half, and finished just outside the town centre. The Core batteria and front commission then headed for the Carnival main stage to perform the song one more time for local radio and to the audience at the main arena.
