About the Planet Sound Drumschool
The Planet Sound Community Arts Drum School was formed in Feb 2001, having developed from informal weekend workshops held in house at Cartwright House, Mitchell Memorial Youth Theatre.

In April 2003 the project recieved a two year grant from the Robbie Williams charity "Give it Sum", and the workshops were led by Simon Waite and Mr.Will, with sessions involving a variety of West African percussion, inlcuding djembes and dunduns.

The Planet Sound Drumschool is based around several terms of work, each with their own focus and outputs.
The Autumn term runs from September to December and the group will compose a piece to be performed alongside a prominent Stoke On Trent based artist as part of the annual Spectrums of Sound showcase.

Winter term runs from January to March and brings a West African Master drummer to teach their material as part of the drumschool.
From April-July, the school focuses on preperation for performances in the City and making recordings of the work.

The summer term consists of workshops in house and visits to touring drumming performances and events such as the drumcamp.

The drumschool welcomes everyone, whatever their ability and experience in drumming. Groups are split into two levels to enable participants to learn at a pace that is right for them.

The Open workshop runs from 3.30 - 5pm and is open to all ages and levels of experience. The focus of this group is to encourage people to try West African percussion styles, and to develop their abilities in group drumming skills.

Workshops for all levels are informal, consisting of exercises that help every participant advance as a musician, and there are chances to perform as part of the group in events nationwide.

The Intermediate session runs on Sundays from 1pm at the Planet Sound premises, part of the Mitchell Memorial Theatre. Typically the participants have been playing percussion for a year or more and have developed their skills to a certain level.
