CREWE CARNIVAL 07 - 20th - 25th AUG 2007 For Crewe Carnival 2007, Planet Sound Artists and The Cultural Sisters worked in Partnership with Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council to create a new Samba group with the aim of performing in Crewe’s annual carnival parade. Working to the theme of "recycling and environmental issues", all the groups involved in the parade were on either foot or in electric/battery powered vehicles. For the first few days,Planet Sound Artists took to the streets of Crewe, recruiting participants for the intensive week of carnival workshops in drumming, dance and costume making. This resulted in a local group of determined young people, most of who had no previous experience in music, dance or performance who stayed with the programme right up to the performance day. On Saturday 25th August the bateria of percussionists led by international Sambista Bosco De Oliveira and dancers led by Clare Reynolds performed at Crewe Carnival. The group were joined by the Cultural Sisters who designed and created the costumes with help from the performers. There were a total of 30 groups and the Planet Sound Carnival group were at the front of the parade which lasted over two hours and went through the town centre, many residential areas finished with a huge celebration in Queens Park. After the event, the group was awarded with first place for "entertainment group" in the parade! The tired participants accepted their awards and everyone was proud of their hard work! We hope this will be the start of more opportunity in our neighbouring town of Crewe, those involved certainly got a taste for it and the hundreds of people who turned out to see the parade reacted positively, many commenting that the Planet Sound group was fantastically energetic and were shocked to hear that it had been formed in less than one week!
